It started out as an anniversary like any other: As they did every year, Blake Ellis and Scott Ewers hopped a flight for a long weekend to San Francisco. But soon, it seemed something was up. “We were at the rooftop bar in our hotel,” says Blake, “when Scott kept trying to get me to go out on the patio in the rain.” Blake said he would, but only under one condition: “Scott had to get me a double martini first.” Undeterred, Scott returned from the bar with Blake’s cocktail in hand, and outside they went, where Scott nervously pulled a ring out of his pocket and proposed in the rain.
Exactly two years later, on their anniversary again, the two said “I do” at their home in Southwest Portland in front of three friends, and their furry pup, Pete. “It went off exactly as we wanted,” says Blake. “It was enough of a difference from our typical days to be special and memorable but without having to buzz around like hummingbirds at a big party.” 9 Dressed in custom suits—Blake’s was cheekily embroidered with “Yass, Kween!” under the collar— the two clinked glasses of Soter’s sparkling rosé and snacked on pastries from St. Honoré before jetting off to SF, keeping their anniversary tradition alive. “Everything we wanted for this day happened,” says Blake. “Everything was perfect.”
