When your OKCupid date cancels on you at the last minute, don’t be afraid to give him a second chance. After all, he just might turn out to be the love of your life. At least, that’s how it played out for Matthew Mauer and Jobie Kubiak.
A graduation day proposal—Matthew did the asking—led to a whirlwind of planning. The couple venue shopped in their hometown of Tacoma, but finding a locale they both agreed on turned out to be tricky. Finally, Jobie scouted out the Arctic Club in Seattle, and Matt fell in love with the historic space, too.
When the wedding day arrived, the classically opulent, romantic club provided the perfect backdrop for Matt and Jobie’s traditional-with-a-twist wedding. Touches like colorful custom lighting (a “really fun splurge”), a stuffed animal toss (instead of a bouquet toss), and even a life-size cardboard cutout standing in for the best man, who was deployed with the Coast Guard, made the day a true expression of the couple’s personalities. Honoring Jobie’s Filipino roots was also important to them, so pandan and ube (purple yam) flavored their wedding cake, and Jobie wore a traditional Filipino barong handwoven with pineapple husk. “Incorporating some Filipino elements was a great way to recognize our two families and cultures blending,” Jobie says.
