A shared love of competitive mathematics, notes passed back and forth hidden in a math textbook as high school students, and finally a proposal spelled out on a TI-89 calculator—for Ruby Rodriguez and Cheovanny Oropeza, it’s all adding up to one happy life together.

Dreams of an epic New Zealand honeymoon drove the pair to plan an intimate, low-key wedding—just close family and a few friends, gathered together in one of their favorite places, Wahclella Falls. With such a small party, Ruby and Cheo were able to approach the day with ease, which left time for impromptu moments that made the day feel even more special: After a 4 a.m. wake-up for a drive out to Rowena Crest for first-look photos, they found themselves with empty stomachs and an extra hour of time, so they zipped over to the Eastwind Drive-In on a whim. “We all ordered food (it was delicious), and as we were about to head out the cashier surprised us with a huge soft-serve ice cream.”

When it came time for the ceremony, the couple hiked to the falls with their 16-person guest list. Surrounded by their closest friends and family and set to the quiet hum of the falls, Ruby and Cheo exchanged vows in a simple ceremony led by a childhood friend. Then, the whole crew packed up and returned to Portland for luxurious lunch in one of Andina’s private rooms. After a quick nap at their Airbnb, the couple made the impromptu decision to keep the party going. “It was still early, so we invited everyone over for a backyard BBQ,” says Ruby. “Everything happened so organically, and we loved every bit of it.”
